The concept of spring cleaning can be traced back to multiple cultures, each of them serving different but similar purposes.

The History of Spring Cleaning

For instance, one of the oldest instances of spring cleaning is suspected to have originated as part of the Persian new year, which begins on the first day of spring. This is part of a widespread tradition in multiple cultures of having a thorough cleaning ritual attached to the coming of the new year. In places like Scotland or Japan, for instance, whose new years fall in winter, they nevertheless still have new year’s cleaning rituals to start the year off right.

Meanwhile, religions like the Jewish and Catholic traditions have spring cleaning as part of a way to prepare for a springtime holiday, cleaning one’s home before or during the celebration.

Or, as is the case in most of North America, there can also be a more mundane, less spiritual reason for why spring cleaning has risen to such prevalence in common parlance. Namely, the beautiful weather. In the spring, it is nice enough out to open all the windows and the doors so that you can air out your home after a long, stuffy winter — but it’s still not so warm that you risk letting too many bugs into your home by doing so. This makes spring the perfect time for most of us here in the States to get to cleaning up all the mess we never did after the winter holidays.
